David Sedgwick, Featured Soloist (Trumpet)
Spring 2022 Concert, Arutunian's Trumpet Concerto

David Sedgwick was born in 1990 in Santa Barbara, California into a very musical family. He started playing the piano at the age of four and was given his first trumpet for Christmas at age five. His love for music formed quickly and deeply, and before long he was participating in every musical group available to him. He joined the SB Youth Symphony at the age of nine on trumpet and continued through his high school years, participating in piano festivals and competitions alongside. He was fortunate enough to be part of his high school jazz band the year that they attended a series of jazz festivals throughout Europe, ranging from France to Switzerland and south through many of the more famous cities in Italy.

He was accepted to the University of California, Los Angeles where he completed his bachelor’s degree in Music Performance with an emphasis in trumpet. UCLA provided him with many opportunities to attend international music festivals and national competitions with his studio. He completed his master’s degree in Music Performance at The Shepherd Conservatory of Music based on Rice University in Houston, Texas. Following his graduate degree, he freelanced in the Houston area for a few years, getting to perform periodically with the Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Ballet, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, played principle baritone in the Houston Brass Band and worked for a handful of recording studios punching tracks on keyboards and trumpet. He also helped create and toured with the Alias Brass Quintet for several faculty-in-residences at brass festivals and workshops before moving back to California to be closer to family.

Upon arriving in Crescent City, he acquired a position playing piano for the local United Methodist Church where he eventually became the music director. He worked for the Del Norte branch of the College of the Redwoods for a year teaching Music History through their satellite program at Pelican Bay prison before the Covid19 pandemic interrupted that program. He now works in Computer Technical Support for the Del Norte Unified School District and continues to direct the music for the church and teaches lessons privately on both instruments.
